A little about me...well im a USA born ER doctor living in shanghai. I am board certified from USA and working in Shanghai and having multiple new experiences everyday. Yesterday I was tricked by a chinese man who basically conned me. He came to me pretending to sell me stolen goods. He stated he had a stolen iphone 4gs. I decided to buy it from him and then he handed me a fake iphone and walked away with my money!
I am an idiot! however i learned a few lessons from this which i will go into. First of all , every event has a pretest probability and certain other event change the post test probability . There are certain characteristics which have + LR and -LR . The pretest prob that the phone was a real phone was about 20% , however his shifty eyes, his strange story of telling me it was a stolen phone, and trying to rush me to buy were all negative lr, lowering the chance of a real phone to less than 5%. I learned that in the future i should approach life more like i do medicine. I should make decisions based on reason and not emotion as life is often ruled by probabilities and not by hope and the willingness to believe something that is likely not true.
